Extra Large Chunky Crochet Blanket

October 28, 2014

If you are hunting around for handmade gift ideas already (like me, yay!) you should probably add this one to the list!

chunky Crochet Blanket06

A super chunky, giant, crochet blanket. Perfect for anyone on your holiday list but especially nice for college kids, or those difficult-to-shop-for men in your life 😉 you know you have one or two! The colors can be changed of course but there is something timeless and classic about white, grey and black that make this palette perfect for all rooms and all tastes.

Materials:

6 skeins Bernat Collegiate Chunky yarn

-2 white

-2 grey

-2 black

Size J crochet hook

Yarn needle

Pattern:

Chain 100. +1 more. Turn.

Single crochet starting in second chain from your hook across entire row + 1 more (always add a single turning chain!).

Work in single crochet for entire two skeins of each color, always changing colors at the end of a row.

That’s it! Couldn’t be easier, right?

Depending on your personal tension, this blanket ends up measuring in at 60″x80″ which I love because it’s larger than baby/throw size and perfect for winter snuggling!

Was looking for a pattern to make my granddaughter-in-law to be finished before xmas. Couldn’t find anything that felt “just right” to don in red, black, & grey.. When I saw this something “clicked”. Great looking blanked & can be finished by the holidays…..

How many hours would you say this takes to complete? I assume it probably works fast being only single crochet stitch.

Very fast- I’d say three house tops.

Hi! This is my first crochet project, and after doing my chain of 100, Im only half way to the 60″ width…. Does this mean my chain is too tight? Should I just add more until my desired width? Hoping anyone can answer this! Thank you!

Yes, your chain may be quite tight! You can either keep going with extra chains (but you may need more yarn) or start over and try to loosen up. You can also increase the hook size to force you to loosen up! All will work 🙂

This is going to be my first crochet project since I was like 8, do you think I could use the Bernat Softee Chunky yarn? In the collegiate yarn don’t have colors that I like (they only have multicolored + one purple). Thank you!

I was using the J size hook and my chain wasn’t measuring out to the 60″. I switched to an N size hook and my chain still isn’t measuring out right. How to get a chain of 100 plus 1 to equal out to the 60″? You’d have to make gigantic loops in your chain. Please help. Thank you

This particular yarn has been discontinued. From my best guesses, a “Super Bulky” yarn will work as a substitute.

I’m skeptical, but Bernat collegiate chunky yarn was posted on Ravalry with the following attributes:

    Name: Collegiate Chunky discontinued
    Brand: Bernat

Weight: Super Bulky (5-6 wpi (Wraps per inch?))

Meterage: 431 yards (394 meters) (that seems like a lot of yarn)
Unit weight: 400 grams (14.11 ounces)
    Gauge: 11.0 sts = 4 inches

    Needle size: US 11 – 8.0 mm
    Hook size: 8.0 mm (L)

    Fibers: 100% Acrylic
    Texture: plied
    Machine wash: yes

Anyway- hope this helps- seems like a cool project, if you can find the right yarn substitute.

I wish I would’ve seen this comment before I bought yarn! Oooft! The best substitute I found was Loops & Thread Charisma yarn. On yarnsub it’s said to be identical. They offer big skeins and small skeins, but for this pattern you will want to get the big skeins. They do offer more colors in the smaller size, so if you Want to use the smaller size, three skeins equal about one of the big skeins. Hoping this helps!!

Hi, I purchased the Bernat Mega Bulky yarn because the Bernat Collegiate Chunky yarn is discontinued. However, I only got two rows done on one color and I was already out of yarn. Is it because my tension was too tight? or because the yarn is a little too chunky and will require more yarn? Should I use a crochet hook bigger than J? What yarn is similar to Bernat Collegiate Chunky yarn? Sorry for all the questions. Hope anyone can help!

The yarn you got should have a recommended hook size on the package- that will give you a place to start! I would imagine you will probably need more yarn (the collegiate yarn came in a HUGE ball) Without knowing the yarn you are using I can’t help more than that… I bet a different hook and more yarn will do the trick though!

After you’ve done the 100 chain +1 and single crochet all the way back over do you continue by single crocheting into the front loop, the back loop or both? Thank you.

Would you please explain to me what is meant by “+1”? Does it mean one extre chain, or one extra sc? Therefore the chain would be 101 ch?
