I felt like time should have stopped yesterday. I wanted to shout at every person I saw out and about, to yell at the world that it was my baby’s first birthday and how could they possibly be doing normal things on such a monumentous day? Is monumentous a word? How can you stand there reading the label on a bread bag at the store when a fairly new human is 1 entire year old today? How can you continue your phone conversation with who-cares-who while such a special collection of moments is happening right NOW?
Well I know how. I was one of those people. Going to work. Making breakfast. Tidying the kitchen, picking up toys, throwing laundry into the Everest sized laundry pile that gets bigger every time I blink. It’s too bad laundry doesn’t disappear on birthdays.
I used up all my Martha Stewart Fairy Dust making Gracie’s smash cake (which- duh- she smashed) henceforth leaving us with no dessert for dinner. So I went against my grain and bought 4 perfect looking, but sadly not perfect tasting, cupcakes-gourmet from Whole Foods. They weren’t that bad, but I felt wholey inadequate about it. Where we once had piles of brightly wrapped presents for our first born’s first birthday, there was just one little box wrapped in brown craft paper for Grace. She doesn’t know. Nor does she care. And nor should I care either- but I do.

Today is a new day. My baby is 1 and we’re moving forward. So many good things are happening in the next few days and we are going to suck it all in like warm sunshine in spring. Or like frosting on a birthday cake…
This was Gracie’s little smash cake. I know, I know. It’s not exactly little per say…But I’m Italian, what can I say? And I just realized that this is the first of not even two but SEVEN “cakes” I had planned for this week… the smash cake was for pictures. The cupcakes were for birthday dinner. More cupcakes, two mini cakes for the girls, and a big cake were planned for The Birthday Party. And then of course a cake on Lilly’s real birthday… Hi, my name is Jacquie and I’m addited to cake.
“Phew, glad I got that off my chest.”
Sweet and easy ombre pink stars were perfect for this cake. I knew we were testing out a white backdrop and that Grace would be wearing something denim related so this all pulled together nicely.
I’m not sure which was better for Grace- the taste of the cake or the feel of the squish.
Mr. Giraffe made it for quite awhile without being knocked over… And as always this was VERY serious business for Gracie Jane.
She sucked on those cute, little, icing-covered fingers for a long, long, long LONG time. It was a total sugar-high-happy-Mommy moment.
We plan on spending the rest of the day locating Mr. Zebra who is supposed to adorn the top of Lilly’s birthday cake on Saturday. He seems to have dissapeared or gone to the race track or Maddy GAS car as Lilly (I think) keeps trying to tell me. Might be going on some adventures today…
ANWAY- if you are looking for first birthday smash cake photos I can make you a cake and photograph it too 😉 Just sayin’.
Wishing you lots of sugary deliciousness.
