Our Custom Home Build Update

January 20, 2021

It’s crazy to think just over a month has passed since we officially started this build. Even through the snow and the rain, all the different crews of people have been working hard making this beautiful home come to life. The girls are glued to the windows every step of the way running up and down the steps, shouting what they see and even taking their own videos and photos. I will never forget watching them watching these walls go up.

Here’s a little drawing of our main living space floor plan.

The stairs aren’t built so I can’t photograph the upstairs at this stage yet but I walked through for a minute today to take some framing progress photos. Everyone we know has been driving by and texting and calling and beeping and are so curious to see everything in the works! We have people stopping and taking pictures, stopping to chat and ask questions, stopping and asking for contact info of the builders. It’s been so fun to literally “share” the process.

The shed to the left of the porch is coming down and the land will be graded nicely so this whole side yard space will be so pretty and useable.
This will be our family’s main entrance into the house! The side door leads to the laundry room/mudroom area.
You might recall this absolutely gorgeous and incredibly old silver maple smashing the deck clear off our old house and totaling the van (one branch literally turned our van into a taco). Sadly it has to come down as it’s not a healthy tree and is in danger of uprooting/having more limbs come down. I had hoped we could save it but alas… goodbye gorgeous tree!
This is what you see right as you walk in the front door! The entrance to the new Illy Lilly office and door to the basement stairs is to the right, closet and powder room off to the left.
Here I am standing in front of the sliders looking at the front doors.
And the glorious kitchen! We designed the whole back wall to be glass -windows or sliders all the way across- to maximize privacy on the street side of the house and keep as much usable wall space on the left wall of the kitchen as possible. I LOVE how this space flows and even though it won’t be massive it will do everything our family needs it to (and more 🙌🏻).
Here is a nice view of the fireplace and main family room. Pretty excited about this space because it will be a little bit more adult since the kids have their own lounge upstairs! This room will still be cozy and comfortable (can you just picture the Christmas tree in the corner? I can!) but also beautiful and relaxing which is exactly what we need.
I took the above photo standing where the range will be. There will be a big island in the middle of this space obviously, then a dining table, then the family room. The sink will be underneath the windows on the left and the fridge will be in the little (big actually) pocket on the right. Those big beams you see in the above photo are actually the deck posts just hanging out until they can go in.
Behold where the future stairs will be! Instead of the traditional stair entry starting at the front doors and going up, we flipped our stairs so they start in the family room. Brandon is convinced this will deter the girls from sneaking out in their teenaged years (he clearly didn’t know me as a teen, ha!) since they have to go through the center of the house to go up or down. But we also really love having the railing and bit of bannister leading into our main living space and are making it a focal point of the whole house.
These beautiful front doors will be painted black. I’m so ridiculously excited about them and know they will be stunning. I love that I’ll be able to see the kids on the porch waiting for the bus, love how high the porch roof is so it doesn’t darken the entry, just really love everything about it. To the right is a big entryway closet. Hooray!!
Now try to switch your brain around… this view shows what it looks like directly to the left when you walk in the side door. There will be lockers on the left and a bench seat situation and the walk in pantry is on the right.
Above is the mudroom/laundry room. The washer and dryer will be under the windows on the left. Not entirely sure how the rest of this space will look so… stay tuned haha.
This photo and the next show the new Illy Lilly headquarters! I cannot even express how excited I am for this space. I’ll be able to leave my work without cleaning it all up, go to my clean kitchen and be with my family without seeing all the work I still have to do. SO EXCITED.
The windows are so big and bright – perfect for all those product photos! There’s also a massive closet we can’t wait fill up with all of our supplies and packaging material. Home Edit, can you please come over?!

That’s all I’ve got for now! Once the stairs are built and usable I’ll give you a little glimpse of the upstairs in all its glory. It’s still so wild to me that this all came from some pencil sketches on computer paper and then Matt and Kim Keith just brought it all to life FOR REAL.

Hope your 2021 is off to a great start!
xoxo
