The girls joint birthday party this year was at Hatch Art Studio, the cutest little art space for kids and families in Pittsburgh. The studio team did a fantastic job with our group that had babies, toddlers, big kids, parents and even the girls Great Grandma Bonnie.
With Sally turning 4 and Olive turning 1 we needed to offer something at Hatch that felt really special to Sally and something that allowed us to have time for a quick smash cake session for Olive. Cake sculptures was the perfect project choice though we had a really hard time deciding between some really really fun options (every single idea sounded fun!).
The birthday girls each each had their own banners that everyone could paint intermittently throughout the party. Aren’t they fun? They also served as an awesome photo backdrop!
I made each of the girls a really simple cake this year. Instead of using fondant or anything complicated I opted for plastic figurines (Sally’s choice) and some paper decorations that I simply hot glued together. I love how they turned out a little bit eclectic and colorful. Perfect with the bright white and colorful things going on inside Hatch Art Studio’s upstairs party space.
We walked in to this perfect setup all ready for little artists to make their cake sculptures! The two party hosts walked them through step by step instructions on how to make their masterpieces. I cannot tell you how much fun was had with this process!
Every kid got to decorate a “cake box” for transporting their three tier cakes home. Such a fun touch and a great filler for early finishers or guests who arrived a little early. They could also play with play dough or create some birthday mail!
Even Olive got in on the painting action!
Kids and parents and grandparents got in on the action! It was awesome to watch.
There is a great room off the main party space that served as a little lounge and place for people to sit and hang or the little ones to get their instructione away from being tempted to touch their materials right away.
I can’t get over my baby lovie’s cake smash session. Everyone could see her and she was the star just for a few minutes! Her party banner and the painted wall behind made for these awesome photos. Can’t wait to blow one up to print!
Each (child) guest got to take home their cake sculpture and a little art themed party bag. These were really simple but SUCH a hit. I heard from parents that the kids went right home and sat down to create their mini canvas art. Win!
Not going to lie, I’m totally hoping the girls want more birthday parties at Hatch! Gracie’s party is up next so there might be some Mom-encouraging going on from now until February!
Have a great Thursday!
