Crochet Cowl Pattern: One Skein Mandala Cowl

November 19, 2018

My crafty inspirations seem to come in waves these days and I’m trying to seize the opportunity to take full advantage of them when they strike. Cold weather and rain (and snow and ice) have us hunkered down at home enjoying cozy projects which for me always means crochet! Something about turning a big ball of yarn into a squishy warm textile is so relaxing. This one skein crochet cowl pattern is an adaptation of an old cowl pattern I blogged years and years ago.  I don’t sell the pattern to that design anymore but you can get a feel for how it looks with chunky yarn if you wanted to switch it up!

This pattern is worked in continuous rounds from a single skein of Lion Brand Mandala yarn in the color Pegasus which means no ends to weave in except for the beginning and end tails. It’s perfect mindless crochet for travel and the resulting color pattern is really unique and interesting.

Crochet cowl patterns can be quick and easy!

The secret to the amazing colors in this crochet cowl pattern is that you hold both ends of the yarn together for the whole piece. One from the outside of the skein and one from the inside of the skein until you meet in the middle and use up the whole skein. The colors ebb and flow into each other in a random way which I love. It’s unexpected and beautiful.

I love the lined texture of this easy crochet cowl. It feels so lovely and looks unique as far as crochet stitches go. But the reverse is equally pretty with a more traditional crochet look and feel.

Pattern:

One skein of Lion Brand Mandala yarn (or similar), size H crochet hook, yarn needle

Holding inside and outside strands of yarn from the same skein together the whole time…

Chain 90.

Join with a slip stitch to work in continuous rounds being careful not to twist chain.

Single crochet in continuous rounds keeping even tension.

Complete 45 rounds (or however many it takes to finish the whole skein).

Weave beginning and end tails.

Thats it! Adjust the size of this cowl by increasing or decreasing the original chain.

You can find this yarn at Walmart for under $5 or at Joann’s or Michaels to purchase with a coupon- that means this quick and easy crochet cowl pattern is a really inexpensive but lovely handmade gift for the holidays.

See all the colors on the lion brand website.

If you make one be sure to tag me on instagram so I can see and share! @sweetersidemom

Happy crocheting, lovely friends.

That is gorgeous and I would love to make that with one of my bazillion mandala cakes that I have aquired over the last several weeks (all on clearance!), but I have such a hard time with continuous rounds — especially when you are talking about 90 chains. I can’t help but twist the first row. Do you have any tips for keeping that first row from twisting? Thanks for sharing your work with us!!

I made this cowl and figured out to get the beautiful line pattern you need to single crochet into the back loop. So you might want to amend your pattern. It’s beautiful!
