I’ve been having fun thinking of uses for various odds and ends I have lying around my craft room. Waste not, want not, or something like that… These cork coasters came from a stack that I was using for something else but the extra ones were begging to be put to good use. A little bit of paint and a half an hour of down time and voila! A lovely little set of coasters with cute sayings was born. Wouldn’t these be fun to gift together with a really cute coffee mug and some unique coffee beans? I would be mighty pleased with that gift, that’s for sure!
Materials (affiliate links used):
(Not pictured) clear varnish spray.
Pencil.
Directions: Use your pencil to lightly draw on the quote you want to paint. It’ll be hard to see but if you shift your coaster a bit in the light you’ll be able to find the line of the shiny graphite to follow when you start painting. If you are struggling with the writing part, search pinterest for some fun quotes or copy mine! There is no wrong way to do this. After you quote is drawn out, pour a bit of paint into a dish and add a drop or two of water with your paint brush. This will thin the paint *just* enough to make it glide a little bit more easily. You many have to use a few coats to cover the cork but I like how it gives you a nice chalkboard sort of look. So cute! When the white paint is dray, lay your coasters out on some newspaper outdoors and spray them with varnish. Let them dry completely and spray them again. You want them to have a nice waterproof seal. Once they’re dry, that’s it! They’re ready for gifting.
It would be fun to make these using a shiny gold paint or to paint the cork black first! Have fun with it and see what you can come up with. One of the best parts is customizing the quotes to the person you are giving these to (or to yourself if you are making a set for keeps). It’s always nice to see a cute quote with your cup o’ joe (or glass of wine depending on time of day) right?!
Happy (almost) Friday, my dears.
