Creating a Functional (and cute!) Shared Bedroom for Three Kids

May 16, 2016

When we first told people we bought a house (!!) the first thing everyone asked was, “How many bedrooms does it have?” I cringed to repeat “just two” over and over and over again. Really? Just two bedrooms?

I grew up in a house with six bedrooms- six BIG bedrooms- so having our kids share a room was never in my plan.  But after moving Gracie in with Lilly when they were 1 and 3 respectively, I realized how good this would be for our family.  We wanted more kids (of course, hi Sally!) but we were definitely years and years away from affording a house with more than two or maybe more than three bedrooms. We could have not had a baby and waited to be able to afford a house with more bedrooms but this plan worked so well for us that I can’t even imagine NOT imaging to do it! And even if we had more bedrooms, if it works to have the kids share, the extra room(s) could become any number of things we’d enjoy- a craft room, play room, guest room, workout room, on and on and on. Of course things may change as our little girls get older but for now, come take a look at how one bedroom works for our three little girls.

The major pieces of this room are the two sets of bunk beds flanking the large walls of this space.  They work for now as low loft beds with each of the bigger girls sleeping on the “top bunk”.  Since no one needs the bottom bunks while Sally’s in her crib, that space remains usable play and storage space that we definitely need.

I haven’t yet decided what pieces of furniture will go underneath each bed but I’m on the hunt for some sort of drawer/storage system that will work for extra clothes storage. This is the one I have my eye on. Even though the closet is huge, it would help to have more closed storage for socks, undies, tights, hair accessories- the little things the kids need easier access to.

I tried to be intentional in here about toys. What do the kids LOVE? What do the kids enjoy playing with the most? What toys are safe to have out alone? Easy to clean up? Will everything have a place to be “put away” when it needs to be? I made sure to answer all these questions as I went along so this room would be easy to maintain. The major things we keep in this room are the girls books (more on them in a sec), their wooden block and doll house (lincoln logs too), our huge duplo collection, rocking horse/giraffe, dollies, and wooden puzzles. That’s about it up here. The little cream colored toy box houses some miscellaneous stuff that the girls like- play food and more babies and stuff. But that’s the gist of what’s in here.

I can’t find these online anymore but they are “storage pod” ottomans or “pod chairs” or something like that from The Container Store! So awesome.

For books we tried to utilize vertical wall space as much as possible.  These clear book shelves from buybuyBABY are literally my favorite thing ever. They are absolutely *perfect* and I love that they showcase the books like artwork up on the wall. Flat books in a bookcase will forever look sad to me, ha! Show those beautiful covers for all they’re worth!

We also love and repurposed these ikea picture ledges as book storage from our old house. They are a great place to keep each girls’ special books at an arms reach while in bed. And again, bonus, showcase the beautifully illustrated book covers! There are still stacks of books all over and boxes of books still packed in the basement but we’ve got a great library out right now and I adore how much all three of the girls love to read.

Something subtle we added to this room that we didn’t have in the girls last room are two cool “techy” things from buybuyBABY.  This nightlight with it’s glow in the dark orbs are SO fun at bedtime and actually help the girls want to go to bed, and to stay there! Win win, right?! And then we just can’t get enough of this vTech baby monitor. I just freaking love this thing. It can pan around to view the ENTIRE room (what?!!!), the night vision is clear, and I love that I can talk to the girls from my end of the video screen. Because sometimes little bodies need big reminders, amiright? Haha. While we’re at it, I might as well mention that we are die hard Beat-Bo fans (hands down best plastic toy on the market).girls shared bedroom ideas30

Everyone asks us about our block sets (aren’t they amazing?!) which are a handmade family heirloom from my brother, Sammy.  As is the dollhouse but made by my other brother, Nicholas. Aren’t Uncles the absolute best? Speaking of awesome Uncles Geoffrey, our Giant Giraffe, comes courtesy of my other brother Eric. So, hmmm… (I have a never ending list of brothers lol) Michael- looks like you need to make a girls’ bedroom addition to beat all the other Uncles. Better get on that!

There are also a few handmade items in this room worth mentioning.  The most darling mobile ever is from a shop called “Pink Cheeks Studios“. These Sweet Littles Handmade dollies are an always-favorite and a night night staple for all three girls. Katy does the absolute best job with these beauties, such a great Christmas present! And then there are these amazing mermaid sleeping bag tails from Alexis of at Whimsy Tails. We are obsessed with them!

And then there are the framed quotes made by yours truly. I ordered these 20″ x 30″ frames from Amazon (they’re perfect, and a great price!) and then typed up the quotes in photo shop. I’m a DMB fan if you can’t tell!  FedEx printed them huge- 26″ by 32″ or something like that for $4.50 each. You can’t beat that for awesome art and you can customize it any way you want. Add some dollar spot lantern lights from Target and…all the heart eyes. Speaking of Target, we selected this bedding and even though the reviews complained SO MUCH about the quality and material of the bedding, we LOVE it so much. It’s soft, the perfect price point for some little girls who will probably change their mind on what they like soon, and totally washable. Five stars from this Mama!

We love how this space turned out and are so excited that the girls all love spending their time in this room. If you see something I didn’t like that you are curious about just let me know! I’ll answer as quick as I can.
