It’s not news to me when Lilly comes downstairs every morning telling me how hungry she is. It is news to me when Lilly comes downstairs asking for, “those heart treats you said are for breakfast.” Momnesia must have been setting in again because I thoroughly cannot remember telling Lilly we had any sort of heart anything for breakfast.
She had a little heart cookie cutter already in hand, though, so we improvised and made our own homemade heart poptarts. I don’t actually buy poptarts because I’m not a big fan (I’ll take bacon and sausage over poptarts any day of the week), but Lilly’s Uncles eat them at my parents house so she associates them with some of her favorite people in the world.
It was snowy and there was no way we were going to the grocery store so I scrounged up all the “fillings” we could find: fresh strawberries, frozen strawberries, blackberry jam, mango, banana chocolate chip, and peanut butter. If I had actually planned to do this I would have had apples, blueberries, and peaches too.
I mixed up a recipe of my Mom’s pie dough (3/4 of a stick of shortening, 2 cups of flour, 1 tsp. salt and 4 Tblsp. ice water) and rolled it out thin. Lilly cut out all the hearts and I filled, pressed, and sealed them with the tongs of a fork.
Go figure that the one time I’m NOT making a pie- my crust comes out perfectly. Ugh. Anywhoo, I baked these for about 25 minutes at 350 degrees (I kept checking on them after about 15 minutes to make sure they weren’t burning).
But these were SO DELICIOUS, I cannot even explain.
Have a great weekend, friends!
